In the aftermath of the terrible flood that inundated Silchar town in June 2022, the Assam government has been taking efforts to avert such calamities in the future. One such strategy is the erosion prevention work being carried out under the SOPD-G on the banks of the Barak River at Annapurna Ghat in the Silchar constituency.
Today, Pijush Hazarika, a BJP politician from Assam and member of the legislative assembly, examined the progress of this job and instructed the department to complete it swiftly and smoothly. This action comes in the aftermath of charges that the destruction of a river embankment and the administration’s refusal to seal the gap caused in the calamity that rocked the town last year.
The flooding from the Barak River had flooded Silchar town for 11 days, with water reaching up to 12 feet (4 metres) in some areas, inflicting significant damage to homes and infrastructure. The episode had caused concern and raised doubts about the ability of the administration to cope with similar calamities.
In light of this, the government has been taking efforts to guarantee that such occurrences do not happen again. The erosion prevention work being carried out under the SOPD-G is one such measure aimed at avoiding erosion and strengthening the river banks to withstand the forces of nature.
