Hifzur Rahman, a convict who had escaped from Silchar Jail on May 11, met a fatal end yesterday in an encounter with Cachar Police near the Meghalaya border. Rahman, notorious for his involvement in the Naz murder case, which sparked violent protests and a curfew in the Bangha area in 2022, attacked the officials during the encounter, resulting in injuries to some of them.
The incident has raised concerns about the security measures in Silchar Jail, prompting authorities to reevaluate and strengthen existing protocols to prevent further escapes and potential acts of violence. The police and prison authorities are expected to release an official statement soon, detailing the circumstances leading to Rahman’s escape and subsequent encounter.
Efforts to apprehend the other escapee, Deep Nunia, are underway, with law enforcement agencies intensifying their search operations. The police are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may aid in capturing Nunia.
