The Assam police in Guwahati have detained a 23-year-old guy on the accusation that he ran away with a minor girl and married her while she was still a minor. The girl’s family brought the incident to the authorities’ attention by filing a complaint against the accused person, who had been on the run ever since then. The police quickly acted after receiving information that the suspect may be found in the Gotanagar neighbourhood of Guwahati.
During the ensuing questioning, the accused confessed to having married the girl and said they had been living in secret to avoid being apprehended by the authorities. The authorities have opened an investigation to investigate whether or not this instance includes a marriage between a minor and an adult.
An official, speaking to the media, said that the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) would be applicable in this case, irrespective of the outcomes of the investigation.
