According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the flood situation in Assam has worsened, with more than 34,000 people impacted across the state (ASDMA). Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Sonitpur, and Udalguri are among the nine districts affected by the initial flood wave.
The deluge hits more than 22,000 people in Lakhimpur, the worst-affected district. Dibrugarh and Kokrajhar had 3,900 and over 2,700 impacted residents, respectively.
Residents of Assam’s riverine regions have been warned by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) to be prepared with emergency kits and to avoid entering rising floods. During this time, fishing, collecting firewood, swimming, and unnecessary river crossings have been heavily discouraged.
523 communities in the nine affected districts are currently inundated by flooding, inflicting substantial damage to around 5,842.78 hectares of crops. Several districts, including Barpeta, Sonitpur, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, and Udalguri, have also seen significant erosion as a result of the flooding.
The ASDMA is constantly monitoring the situation and collaborating with local authorities to aid those impacted. Efforts are being made to limit more damage and guarantee the safety and well-being of the impacted populations. The state government, in collaboration with other relief organisations, is actively engaged in rescue efforts and has set up relief camps to give shelter, food, and medical aid to those impacted. To lessen the impact of the floods and restore normalcy in the affected regions, adequate steps are being implemented.
