Harassment of Senior citizens at government offices in Karimganj

The demand for setting up a medical college within 10 km of the district’s main hospital was raised by Assam Senior Citizens Karimganj District Organization. According to National Medical Commission, a medical college was to be set up within 10 kms of the district hospital.

The commission expressed that the government should take the necessary steps on this issue. On the same day, Arpita Kar of District Legal Services Authority; Bipul Bihari Sharmacharya, President of the organization Abhiyan Kanti Mazumdar, Member NF Railway Pensioners Association; and former Ward Commissioners, Sukhendu Das, Manatosh Dev, Sukhendubikash Pal took part in the discussion.

Meanwhile, in a statement on various issues, including the functioning of the Senior Citizens’ organization, Nani Bhushan Deb said that in different parts of the Karimganj district, senior citizens are often the victims of harassment in government offices. He said that despite the instructions of the Reserve Bank Of India and the government for the benefit of senior citizens in the banks, it is not being followed in any bank.

As a result, he has to stand in a long line at this old age. He said that senior citizens are deprived of all facilities. Apart from banks, senior citizens are facing problems in transport corporations, power departments, postal departments, and railway stations. Because of the indifference of the office heads, such a situation has arisen, he complained.

The district general secretary said in a statement that no response was received even after the issues were raised in the presence of others, including the district magistrate. Even the District Legal Services Authority’s demand to ensure the rights of senior citizens did not work. He also said that he has to be a regular victim of harassment while collecting his pension. The same condition is in the hospital.

He also raised issues regarding the traffic congestion in the city.
