“It depends on timing”: Ayushman Khurrana on the Box Office Failure of An Action Hero

An Action Hero, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Jaideep Ahlawat and helmed by industry newcomer Anirudh Iyer, underperformed at the box office for reasons the actor attributes to “bad timing.”

Ayushmann plays Manav, an action hero on the run from Bhura Solanki (Jaideep), who wants revenge for his brother’s death and will be releasing the film on December 2, 2022. In January of 2023, the film was made available on Netflix India, where it quickly fizzled and, according to industry experts, only amassed 16.24 cr. Ayushmann told PTI that the time of the film’s release is crucial and that he is relieved that low- and medium-budget movies are finding audiences.

He further admitted that he faced competition for his theatrical release from over-the-top (OTT) and social media outlets. But he included that he is proud of his filmography and that his fans may anticipate more of the same from him in the future.

For his role in Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun, Ayushmann received the National Award for Best Actor. His acting career began in 2012 with Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor (2018). He is slated to feature in Dream Girl 2 alongside Ananya Panday.
