Delimitation Draft Sparks Protests in Assam, Congress Leaders Allege Government Bias

In a dramatic turn of events, the release of the delimitation draft by the Government has ignited widespread protests in Assam. Prominent Congress leaders, Abdul Khaleque, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and Abdur Rahim Ahmed, have taken charge of the demonstrations, expressing their discontent with the delimitation process.

The protesters assembled in front of the Barpeta District Commissioner’s office, vehemently opposing the newly determined constituencies. Abdul Khaleque, one of the key leaders, made a controversial claim stating that the draft was personally crafted by Himanta Biswa Sharma, Assam’s Chief Minister, rather than the impartial involvement of the Election Commission.

Adding fuel to the fire, Khaleque drew a highly contentious comparison between the Chief Minister and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, evoking further outrage among the protestors and political observers.

Jakir Hussain Sikdar, another Congress leader, rejected the newly proposed constituencies and demanded the inclusion of the previously agreed-upon eight constituencies in Barpeta District.

Highlighting the dissatisfaction among various communities, Abdur Rahman Ahmed pointed to the ongoing protests by the Koch-Rajbongshi community in Bongaon, underscoring the widespread disapproval of the delimitation process.
